Narrative:

The controller pointed out traffic at 2 O'clock less than 1000 ft below but issued no vector or altitude change. About the time he quit talking, TCASII issued a TA. The first officer and I began looking then almost immediately the TCASII issued a climb advisory. We initiated a climb from 11000 ft to 12000 ft. We notified ATC and he seemed unconcerned. As we approached jfk's TCA we got 3 more TA's and 1 of which became an RA that caused us to descend 500 ft when 20 NM north of bridgeport, ct. The 2 TA's we got a visual on both aircraft, the RA we never saw.
