Narrative:

On takeoff from lax engine fire warnings #1 engine came on then off then on again. Throttle reduced to idle, warnings stop, then on again. Engine shut down and fire extinguisher discharged but no discharge. Tried again and no bottle discharge. Relief pilot checked engine visually and no fire and the aircraft had a previous write-up for 1 fire loop detector fault in #1 engine. Returned to lax, declared emergency. No problems.
