Narrative:
I was taking a student on a night flight in the dc area. I am not familiar with all airports in the area and I have operated out of 2w5 airport. As I was flying, I was thinking of suitable airports for night takeoff and lndgs. 2w5 airport was lighted, so I decided to have the student practice there (since W28 sets in a valley, after doing 3 lndgs, a man approached us and informed us that the airport was closed to transient aircraft. We then did 1 takeoff and left the pattern back to potomac. No hazards/danger involved. Factors: airport was lighted. Unable to check AFD for 'closed airport' stated. Closest suitable airport to potomac. After told, takeoff and returned to potomac. My actions were inadequate since I did not familiarize myself with all available information. (It was not a preplanned stop.)

AFTER TOLD, TKOF AND RETURNED TO POTOMAC. MY ACTIONS WERE INADEQUATE SINCE I DID NOT FAMILIARIZE MYSELF WITH ALL AVAILABLE INFO. (IT WAS NOT A PREPLANNED STOP.)
