Narrative:

On air carrier flight from cmh to jfk, we were vectored off flight plan from chardon (cxr) to join J-70 southeast of jamestown (jhw). We were then cleared from FL290 to FL310. We responded 'cleared from FL290 to FL310.' after commencing climb to FL310, a cabin attendant informed the cockpit crew of a strange odor in the aft passenger compartment. During the discussion with the attendant, cle ATC asked us to verify altitude as FL310. At that time the altitude was noted to be approximately 31800 MSL. The aircraft was immediately descended to FL310. Conflicting traffic at FL330 was in visual contact. Contributing factors were distrs regarding odor and being required to level at wrong altitude for eastbound direction of flight.
