Narrative:

Shortly after start of descent, the main deck cargo smoke detector warning light illuminated. Emergency and normal checklist procedures were followed. Emergency declared and company notified at XX39Z. Descent and landing were uneventful. Aircraft was taxied clear of runways and after it was determined there was no immediate danger to the crew, aircraft was taxied to a remote area for inspection by anc fire team. After fire team found no evidence of fire and released aircraft, the aircraft was taxied to normal parking. It was discovered during the emergency that the so's oxygen mask hose was too short for him to reach the throttles. Also visibility was something of a problem due to the lack of a full face mask. East.g., with the oxygen mask and goggles over my tri- focal glasses, it was difficult to look outside and read the instrument panel at the same time. This necessitated bobbing my head up and down and I therefore elected to have the first officer make the landing. I can't recommend strongly enough the requirement for full face masks for all 'T' category aircraft.

Title: AN ACR WDB FREIGHTER HAD A MAIN CARGO COMPARTMENT FIRE WARNING WHILE ON DSCNT. THERE WAS NO FIRE AND NO RPTED DAMAGE OR INJURIES.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER START OF DSCNT, THE MAIN DECK CARGO SMOKE DETECTOR WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. EMER AND NORMAL CHKLIST PROCS WERE FOLLOWED. EMER DECLARED AND COMPANY NOTIFIED AT XX39Z. DSCNT AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL. ACFT WAS TAXIED CLR OF RWYS AND AFTER IT WAS DETERMINED THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE DANGER TO THE CREW, ACFT WAS TAXIED TO A REMOTE AREA FOR INSPECTION BY ANC FIRE TEAM. AFTER FIRE TEAM FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF FIRE AND RELEASED ACFT, THE ACFT WAS TAXIED TO NORMAL PARKING. IT WAS DISCOVERED DURING THE EMER THAT THE SO'S OXYGEN MASK HOSE WAS TOO SHORT FOR HIM TO REACH THE THROTTLES. ALSO VISIBILITY WAS SOMETHING OF A PROBLEM DUE TO THE LACK OF A FULL FACE MASK. E.G., WITH THE OXYGEN MASK AND GOGGLES OVER MY TRI- FOCAL GLASSES, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO LOOK OUTSIDE AND READ THE INST PANEL AT THE SAME TIME. THIS NECESSITATED BOBBING MY HEAD UP AND DOWN AND I THEREFORE ELECTED TO HAVE THE FO MAKE THE LNDG. I CAN'T RECOMMEND STRONGLY ENOUGH THE REQUIREMENT FOR FULL FACE MASKS FOR ALL 'T' CATEGORY ACFT.
