Narrative:

While being vectored for approach to the wichita, ks, airport our TCASII system showed traffic 800 ft below about 3 mi at 1 O'clock, climbing. At the time our heading was 290 degrees. When told to turn to 350 degrees, TCASII warned not to descend and climb at 2000 FPM. The autoplt was disconnected and immediately a 'clear of conflict' was issued by TCASII system. Altitude variation was less than 100 ft. Approach was not notified due to no deviation. FAA inspector on jump seat said he would report TCASII incident.

Title: FLC OF ACR MLG ACFT RESPONDED TO A TCASII ALERT AND BRIEFLY STOPPED DSCNT FOR LNDG.

Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR APCH TO THE WICHITA, KS, ARPT OUR TCASII SYS SHOWED TFC 800 FT BELOW ABOUT 3 MI AT 1 O'CLOCK, CLBING. AT THE TIME OUR HDG WAS 290 DEGS. WHEN TOLD TO TURN TO 350 DEGS, TCASII WARNED NOT TO DSND AND CLB AT 2000 FPM. THE AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED AND IMMEDIATELY A 'CLR OF CONFLICT' WAS ISSUED BY TCASII SYS. ALT VARIATION WAS LESS THAN 100 FT. APCH WAS NOT NOTIFIED DUE TO NO DEV. FAA INSPECTOR ON JUMP SEAT SAID HE WOULD RPT TCASII INCIDENT.
