Narrative:

300 degree heading climb out through haze layer. At 1200 controller called small aircraft Y traffic at 11 O'clock 1700 descending to runway 18. Reply 'no contact,' continued climb out at 1500 FPM. Evasive action required to prevent mid air collision. Small aircraft Y took a dive. I took a climb. Luckily our reflexes were each in the right direction. Moral: ask for traffic updates as controllers next response was 'traffic no factor.'
