Narrative:

After takeoff we were told to climb to 5000: 5000 is the transition altitude. We changed altitude setting to 29.92 and leveled at FL50. No conflict arose, but ATC asked what altitude we were at. We later realized that the altimeter setting should not have been changed until passing 5000.
