Narrative:

10 mi east of hayward descending from flight in stockton area. Contacted hayward tower. Tower acknowledged and notified me of helicopter flying low in castro valley area. I acknowledged and said I was looking. Descended to 1500 ft AGL, in castro valley area I saw helicopter at 12 O'clock moving to 11 O'clock descending. I took evasive action by pulling the nose up far enough to safely avoid the helicopter while still keeping it in sight. Aircraft passed below left wing approximately 200-300 ft below and the same distance to the side.
