Narrative:

We were holding short of dfw 17R for takeoff clearance. I was conducting a first officer IOE training and this was the first leg. Dfw tower called us stating that in trail separation was needed and 'other' verbiage. I started taxi, crossing hold short line. First officer hesitated, then stated we do not have clearance into position. There was landing traffic on 17R. I stopped! Traffic landed and we were cleared for takeoff. Advisory communication by tower was confused by me as position and hold for traffic separation. Once again, complacency and non standard operations.
