Narrative:

#1 engine fault detector came on. We went through abnormal checklist and completed procedure. A few mins later, we got a fire warning on #1. Followed procedure and shut down #1 engine, returned atl and declared emergency. We requested runway 27R atl. When we got on tower they cleared a heavy jet on runway for takeoff. Subsequent conversations showed they did not know we had an engine shut down. Somebody dropped the ball. Maybe adding code word to call sign like we do for lifeguard might stop this.
