Narrative:

I was about 25 mi south of rochester, ny, turning north towards the airport. Several mins later rochester approach (with whom I hd been in contact and squawking their assigned code) called me and reported traffic 11 O'clock eastbound indicating 3000 ft. I looked and then caught a glimpse of an small aircraft Y at 9:30/10 O'clock at same altitude on a collision course. I pulled up a couple of hundred ft while turning slightly right to keep plane in my view. He passed behind and below me. I had reported to ATC as soon as I saw the traffic. The controller being on top of things and advising me, averted a real close call.
