Narrative:

Flight was about 3 mi outside silex (fix) and at an intercept angle to the localizer of approximately 60 degree. TRACON warned of a possible traffic conflict at approximately 1 mi and at 12 O'clock (to current heading), and that radar showed it to be at co-altitude. I believe that TRACON said that I was cleared to deviate. I was plting the aircraft manually and looking in the direction of the TA immediately visually acquiring the traffic. It was at 12 O'clock and closing. The aircraft was not moving on the windscreen. I started the left bank to intercept the localizer to runway 08. I increased the bank angle to 30 degree and simultaneously began a positive descent to avoid a collision. I do not believe that my maneuver was a 'last ditch' act to avoid since visual acquisition had been established long enough to smoothly execute the solution. I observed the traffic as an small aircraft. The traffic began a shallow left bank and appeared to climb slightly, then roll out and level off. The closest point of approach was between 300 and 500 ft laterally and at co-altitude. At the gate the first officer spoke with TRACON supervisor FAA. I called TRACON personally prior to departure and they advised that they would initiate a near miss report and that I should do the same.

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-MLG GA-SMA W OF BUR.

Narrative: FLT WAS ABOUT 3 MI OUTSIDE SILEX (FIX) AND AT AN INTERCEPT ANGLE TO THE LOC OF APPROX 60 DEG. TRACON WARNED OF A POSSIBLE TFC CONFLICT AT APPROX 1 MI AND AT 12 O'CLOCK (TO CURRENT HDG), AND THAT RADAR SHOWED IT TO BE AT CO-ALT. I BELIEVE THAT TRACON SAID THAT I WAS CLRED TO DEVIATE. I WAS PLTING THE ACFT MANUALLY AND LOOKING IN THE DIRECTION OF THE TA IMMEDIATELY VISUALLY ACQUIRING THE TFC. IT WAS AT 12 O'CLOCK AND CLOSING. THE ACFT WAS NOT MOVING ON THE WINDSCREEN. I STARTED THE L BANK TO INTERCEPT THE LOC TO RWY 08. I INCREASED THE BANK ANGLE TO 30 DEG AND SIMULTANEOUSLY BEGAN A POSITIVE DSCNT TO AVOID A COLLISION. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT MY MANEUVER WAS A 'LAST DITCH' ACT TO AVOID SINCE VISUAL ACQUISITION HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED LONG ENOUGH TO SMOOTHLY EXECUTE THE SOLUTION. I OBSERVED THE TFC AS AN SMA. THE TFC BEGAN A SHALLOW L BANK AND APPEARED TO CLB SLIGHTLY, THEN ROLL OUT AND LEVEL OFF. THE CLOSEST POINT OF APCH WAS BTWN 300 AND 500 FT LATERALLY AND AT CO-ALT. AT THE GATE THE FO SPOKE WITH TRACON SUPVR FAA. I CALLED TRACON PERSONALLY PRIOR TO DEP AND THEY ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD INITIATE A NEAR MISS RPT AND THAT I SHOULD DO THE SAME.
