Narrative:

We were descended by center from 14000 ft to 5000 ft. Traffic was called at 11 O'clock, 6000 ft VFR. We could not see because the sun was in our eyes and it was very hazy. I don't think they told us he was descending either but I could be wrong. We had asked for pilots discretion to 5000 ft but it was denied. Center called the traffic, then handed us off to approach. The airplane passed just to our right a little higher than we were. The captain reported a near miss. We didn't see him until it was almost too late. The other guy never saw us. It would be a lot better if approach could keep us at a higher altitude over scurry (one of the arrival gates into dfw) and keep us out of VFR traffic, which is at the lower altitudes.
