Narrative:

After receiving taxi clearance I started to taxi toward what I thought was the taxiway paralleling the runway. When I turned to start down the taxiway I found that I was actually turning onto the runway. I made a quick exit and taxied away from the runway west/O incident. Having not been to bfi before I should have asked for clearer instructions. However, the ground controller was very busy and I really thought I was going the right way. Better runway marking and taxiway marking would have been a big help. I understand this is a common problem at bfi. Even with the aid of a ground taxi map sitting low to the ground this really in an easy mistake to make. Later in the day I spoke with the controller who was working ground and she told me I did not cause a problem but also that this was not uncommon at bfi.
