Narrative:

I was on a left downwind for 9L. Cleared to land #2 behind an aircraft on short final. Asked for a long landing and it was approved. After traffic on final, cleared runway. We were slightly downwind of midfield, so we (student and I) turned base and final to land long on upwind end of 8000' runway as cleared by tower. Turning off runway, tower gave us a bunch of static for flying a short approach. I said they cleared us to land long, but they said we hadn't been cleared for a 'short approach.' what do they expect us to do? Fly downwind 3 mi to do a long landing? No other aircraft were in the air traffic area and there was no conflict created.

Narrative: I WAS ON A LEFT DOWNWIND FOR 9L. CLRED TO LAND #2 BEHIND AN ACFT ON SHORT FINAL. ASKED FOR A LONG LNDG AND IT WAS APPROVED. AFTER TFC ON FINAL, CLRED RWY. WE WERE SLIGHTLY DOWNWIND OF MIDFIELD, SO WE (STUDENT AND I) TURNED BASE AND FINAL TO LAND LONG ON UPWIND END OF 8000' RWY AS CLRED BY TWR. TURNING OFF RWY, TWR GAVE US A BUNCH OF STATIC FOR FLYING A SHORT APCH. I SAID THEY CLRED US TO LAND LONG, BUT THEY SAID WE HADN'T BEEN CLRED FOR A 'SHORT APCH.' WHAT DO THEY EXPECT US TO DO? FLY DOWNWIND 3 MI TO DO A LONG LNDG? NO OTHER ACFT WERE IN THE ATA AND THERE WAS NO CONFLICT CREATED.
