Narrative:

The departure was off runway 13 at mot. The WX was mid-level overcast and rainy with 4-5 mi visibility. The tower was not open yet and the FSS had no reports of birds. An medium large transport had departed about 5 mins before us on the same runway. The takeoff role was normal. After rotation, at approximately 30' AGL, we saw a large flock of medium sized birds below the level of the cockpit moving directly across our path. We heard and felt several impacts on the airframe. The smell from ingested birds in the air conditioning and a low frequency vibration indicated we had ingested birds in one or both engines. All engine indications were normal, but we decided to return immediately for a landing. We informed the head F/a that we were returning because of bird strikes for a normal landing. The pattern and landing were normal. After landing we shut down the #2 engine and the vibration ceased. After parking, an inspection showed that a 6-8' section of fan blade was missing from the #2 engine along with extensive damage to the fan stage. The city closed the airport for 2 hours while they removed roughly 75-100 sea gulls from the runway. The F/a's also told us that they had observed a large fireball from the #2 engine during the ingestion.

Title: MLG ACFT HAD BIRD STRIKE AND BIRD INGESTION INTO #2 ENGINE. SMOKE, SMELL, FIREBALL FROM #2 ENGINE AND ROUGH VIBRATION DICTATED IMMEDIATE RETURN AND LAND. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO ENGINE.

Narrative: THE DEP WAS OFF RWY 13 AT MOT. THE WX WAS MID-LEVEL OVCST AND RAINY WITH 4-5 MI VISIBILITY. THE TWR WAS NOT OPEN YET AND THE FSS HAD NO RPTS OF BIRDS. AN MLG HAD DEPARTED ABOUT 5 MINS BEFORE US ON THE SAME RWY. THE TKOF ROLE WAS NORMAL. AFTER ROTATION, AT APPROX 30' AGL, WE SAW A LARGE FLOCK OF MEDIUM SIZED BIRDS BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE COCKPIT MOVING DIRECTLY ACROSS OUR PATH. WE HEARD AND FELT SEVERAL IMPACTS ON THE AIRFRAME. THE SMELL FROM INGESTED BIRDS IN THE AIR CONDITIONING AND A LOW FREQ VIBRATION INDICATED WE HAD INGESTED BIRDS IN ONE OR BOTH ENGS. ALL ENG INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL, BUT WE DECIDED TO RETURN IMMEDIATELY FOR A LNDG. WE INFORMED THE HEAD F/A THAT WE WERE RETURNING BECAUSE OF BIRD STRIKES FOR A NORMAL LNDG. THE PATTERN AND LNDG WERE NORMAL. AFTER LNDG WE SHUT DOWN THE #2 ENG AND THE VIBRATION CEASED. AFTER PARKING, AN INSPECTION SHOWED THAT A 6-8' SECTION OF FAN BLADE WAS MISSING FROM THE #2 ENG ALONG WITH EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FAN STAGE. THE CITY CLOSED THE ARPT FOR 2 HRS WHILE THEY REMOVED ROUGHLY 75-100 SEA GULLS FROM THE RWY. THE F/A'S ALSO TOLD US THAT THEY HAD OBSERVED A LARGE FIREBALL FROM THE #2 ENG DURING THE INGESTION.
