Narrative:

Inbound flight (with different crew) had FAA inspector on board. Inspector wrote several items up on inbound aircraft, including some screws which were loose on leading edge of wing. Inbound crew stated the FAA inspector admitted the items were 'minor in nature,' but said he would follow up on his write-ups. The inbound captain wrote the items up in the maintenance log. My captain started to call maintenance control at home office, but did not. After arriving at next stop (bna), maintenance control advised captain that he should have called to get authority/authorized to depart with open write-ups in maintenance log. The only problem was departing avl with open write-ups in maintenance log. As for loose screws, etc, I could not find anything wrong with said aircraft on my preflight. To prevent recurrence, a phone call to maintenance to get released with open write-ups or maintenance authority/authorized to continue the flight would keep things legal.

INBND CREW STATED THE FAA INSPECTOR ADMITTED THE ITEMS WERE 'MINOR IN NATURE,' BUT SAID HE WOULD FOLLOW UP ON HIS WRITE-UPS. THE INBND CAPT WROTE THE ITEMS UP IN THE MAINT LOG. MY CAPT STARTED TO CALL MAINT CTL AT HOME OFFICE, BUT DID NOT. AFTER ARRIVING AT NEXT STOP (BNA), MAINT CTL ADVISED CAPT THAT HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED TO GET AUTH TO DEPART WITH OPEN WRITE-UPS IN MAINT LOG. THE ONLY PROB WAS DEPARTING AVL WITH OPEN WRITE-UPS IN MAINT LOG. AS FOR LOOSE SCREWS, ETC, I COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH SAID ACFT ON MY PREFLT.
