Narrative:

Upon clearing runway 18R at clt, I contacted ground control. Ground control told me to 'hold short of runway 18L at C6.' looking down taxiway alpha it did not appear I could get to the other side of the airport to parking. I followed an airlines jet down taxiway 'echo' and turned eastbound on taxiway 'microphone', which went across the airport. Ground control had assumed that I knew to take taxiway 'alpha' and not taxiway 'microphone'. She was surprised that I was on the north side of runway 5/23. This error is shared by both controller (ground) and pilot. The clearance was issued assuming the pilot was familiar with the field when I was not; however, I might have questioned the clearance and checked the airport chart depicting the txwys.

Title: INCORRECT TAXI FOR ATX ACFT AT CLT.

Narrative: UPON CLRING RWY 18R AT CLT, I CONTACTED GND CTL. GND CTL TOLD ME TO 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 18L AT C6.' LOOKING DOWN TXWY ALPHA IT DID NOT APPEAR I COULD GET TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ARPT TO PARKING. I FOLLOWED AN AIRLINES JET DOWN TXWY 'ECHO' AND TURNED EBND ON TXWY 'MIKE', WHICH WENT ACROSS THE ARPT. GND CTL HAD ASSUMED THAT I KNEW TO TAKE TXWY 'ALPHA' AND NOT TXWY 'MIKE'. SHE WAS SURPRISED THAT I WAS ON THE N SIDE OF RWY 5/23. THIS ERROR IS SHARED BY BOTH CTLR (GND) AND PLT. THE CLRNC WAS ISSUED ASSUMING THE PLT WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE FIELD WHEN I WAS NOT; HOWEVER, I MIGHT HAVE QUESTIONED THE CLRNC AND CHKED THE ARPT CHART DEPICTING THE TXWYS.
