Narrative:

At instrument, I checked WX and approved VFR student x-country. WX was VFR with clearing in upper valley; marginal to north/northwest, clear to east. Forecast broken 1000-15000 en route, improving as sun burned off low clouds. Destination was 120 NM away, and VFR. Flight plan filed; never opened as student never left departure control. Shortly after takeoff, WX moved in rapidly. Student requested from departure. Vector resulted in student becoming momentarily IMC. Outstanding job by controller thereafter; student did a safer job in following direction. Was vectored to VMC; student found FMC airport (better than 1000' 15 mi visibility) and landed. Airport where student landed was about 5 NM from departure airport. Total flight time: 0.4. Questionable decision by instrument. Instrument and student had briefed a variety of 'what if's.'
