Narrative:

I was under the control of mdw radar. I told the controller that I wanted to shoot the ILS runway 30 at gyy, doing the entire approach. He told me that I had to go to ord approach control for that, and to squawk 1200, frequency change approved. Ord gave me a discrete squawk. They told me to contact gyy tower for my approach. I then contacted the tower and squawked 1200. I was approximately 2 mi north of the field. I called my position to the tower, and they asked me twice if I was IFR or VFR. Both times I told them I had been in contact with ord approach control, and that they handed me off to the tower. I dared not say VFR, because that would have been an automatic air traffic area incursion. About the only thing that I could have done to avoid this is to have filed an IFR flight plan. The tower cleared me for the approach to 30, circling to land on runway 20. Upon landing rollout, I made a left turn onto runway 12/30. The tower scolded me, saying that one is never supposed to taxi off the runway onto anything but a taxiway unless given permission to do so by ATC. This is the first time that I have ever heard of this, and I have been flying for 17 yrs. In fact, it is common to turn off onto a cross runway at mdw, where I usually fly.

Title: GA SMA UNAUTH TAXI AFTER LNDG AT GYY.

Narrative: I WAS UNDER THE CTL OF MDW RADAR. I TOLD THE CTLR THAT I WANTED TO SHOOT THE ILS RWY 30 AT GYY, DOING THE ENTIRE APCH. HE TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO GO TO ORD APCH CTL FOR THAT, AND TO SQUAWK 1200, FREQ CHANGE APPROVED. ORD GAVE ME A DISCRETE SQUAWK. THEY TOLD ME TO CONTACT GYY TWR FOR MY APCH. I THEN CONTACTED THE TWR AND SQUAWKED 1200. I WAS APPROX 2 MI N OF THE FIELD. I CALLED MY POS TO THE TWR, AND THEY ASKED ME TWICE IF I WAS IFR OR VFR. BOTH TIMES I TOLD THEM I HAD BEEN IN CONTACT WITH ORD APCH CTL, AND THAT THEY HANDED ME OFF TO THE TWR. I DARED NOT SAY VFR, BECAUSE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN AUTOMATIC ATA INCURSION. ABOUT THE ONLY THING THAT I COULD HAVE DONE TO AVOID THIS IS TO HAVE FILED AN IFR FLT PLAN. THE TWR CLRED ME FOR THE APCH TO 30, CIRCLING TO LAND ON RWY 20. UPON LNDG ROLLOUT, I MADE A LEFT TURN ONTO RWY 12/30. THE TWR SCOLDED ME, SAYING THAT ONE IS NEVER SUPPOSED TO TAXI OFF THE RWY ONTO ANYTHING BUT A TXWY UNLESS GIVEN PERMISSION TO DO SO BY ATC. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD OF THIS, AND I HAVE BEEN FLYING FOR 17 YRS. IN FACT, IT IS COMMON TO TURN OFF ONTO A CROSS RWY AT MDW, WHERE I USUALLY FLY.
