Narrative:

On taxi-out I set the flaps to position #1, not 5. I then checked the data for runway 8 flaps 5 with a tailwind of 5 KTS. I failed to set the flaps to 5. 5 is the lowest setting for the medium large transport as operated by our airline. We have no data for flaps 1. We fly 3 models of the medium large transport. They are the 2, 3 and 5. The 2 and 3 do have a flaps 1 takeoff setting and it affords the greatest fuel savings in most situations. On this morning we had a change in departure runway and a work related conversation with an F/a as taxied for takeoff. As the power was added for takeoff the takeoff warning horn sounded and the captain closed the throttle. We rolled approximately 50'. We immediately knew what had happened. We taxied clear off the runway and reset the flaps to 5. The complete checklist was reread and we departed west/O incident. The checklist, our biggest crutch, doesn't help in this situation. This can happen to me, was the lesson. To preclude this from happening again, a yellow or red band painted on the flap position indicator or flap track handle thing and a double check by the captain of the V speeds and flap settings would be big helps. Also a placard showing the V speeds/flap settings as we had in the past, but had to remove per FAA.

WE TAXIED CLR OFF THE RWY AND RESET THE FLAPS TO 5. THE COMPLETE CHKLIST WAS REREAD AND WE DEPARTED W/O INCIDENT. THE CHKLIST, OUR BIGGEST CRUTCH, DOESN'T HELP IN THIS SITUATION. THIS CAN HAPPEN TO ME, WAS THE LESSON. TO PRECLUDE THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN, A YELLOW OR RED BAND PAINTED ON THE FLAP POS INDICATOR OR FLAP TRACK HANDLE THING AND A DOUBLE CHK BY THE CAPT OF THE V SPDS AND FLAP SETTINGS WOULD BE BIG HELPS. ALSO A PLACARD SHOWING THE V SPDS/FLAP SETTINGS AS WE HAD IN THE PAST, BUT HAD TO REMOVE PER FAA.
