Narrative:

Acting as a check airman for my first officer who was flying the aircraft, we were given a clearance by a very busy approach controller to descend to what we thought was 7000'. I read back, 'leaving 11000' for 7000'' twice, with no response by ATC, who was very busy at the time. I was also busy instructing at the time. Out of about 7600' ATC said, 'I cleared you to 8000'. I see you have left 8000'. Continue to 7000' at this time.' no apparent conflicts.
