Narrative:

I was giving mountain flight instruction to a commercial pilot. We had various destinations within mountainous areas. I knew we lacked mode C and had intentions to skirt the rno arsa. We checked in with approach control for landing to practice ATC procedures. Radar identify was difficult as we were low. We announced our diversion to the next destination. We were informed by the controller that we could enter the area as soon as we were idented. This distracted me momentarily as I was having a difficult time relating ATC procedures to my student. We were idented and proceeded to land. Upon leaving the area, departure controller pointed out incoming traffic. He requested our altitude and asked if we had mode C. I immediately remembered that we did not and said so. We were not in conflict with other traffic and traffic was light. I feel I allowed myself to become distracted in the course of giving instruction. I will no placard all aircraft I fly with 'no mode C installed.' I hope this will in the future help me, as well as others.

Title: INSTRUCTOR WITH STUDENT ENTERS ARSA WITHOUT MODE C.

Narrative: I WAS GIVING MOUNTAIN FLT INSTRUCTION TO A COMMERCIAL PLT. WE HAD VARIOUS DESTS WITHIN MOUNTAINOUS AREAS. I KNEW WE LACKED MODE C AND HAD INTENTIONS TO SKIRT THE RNO ARSA. WE CHKED IN WITH APCH CTL FOR LNDG TO PRACTICE ATC PROCS. RADAR IDENT WAS DIFFICULT AS WE WERE LOW. WE ANNOUNCED OUR DIVERSION TO THE NEXT DEST. WE WERE INFORMED BY THE CTLR THAT WE COULD ENTER THE AREA AS SOON AS WE WERE IDENTED. THIS DISTRACTED ME MOMENTARILY AS I WAS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME RELATING ATC PROCS TO MY STUDENT. WE WERE IDENTED AND PROCEEDED TO LAND. UPON LEAVING THE AREA, DEP CTLR POINTED OUT INCOMING TFC. HE REQUESTED OUR ALT AND ASKED IF WE HAD MODE C. I IMMEDIATELY REMEMBERED THAT WE DID NOT AND SAID SO. WE WERE NOT IN CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC AND TFC WAS LIGHT. I FEEL I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BECOME DISTRACTED IN THE COURSE OF GIVING INSTRUCTION. I WILL NO PLACARD ALL ACFT I FLY WITH 'NO MODE C INSTALLED.' I HOPE THIS WILL IN THE FUTURE HELP ME, AS WELL AS OTHERS.
