Narrative:

On takeoff from lga, cleared to climb to 5000'. SID called for a turn to 055 degree at 600' from runway 4. When contacting departure control at around 1000' AGL a turn to 360 degree was given. In the turn going through about 060 degree we noticed traffic above us on a northernly course and close. First officer stopped the turn and leveled at 2000' with the traffic going directly over us. We asked the controller and his response was traffic over the VOR at 2500' approximately 3 mi away nothing more was said.
