Narrative:

Cleared to taxi from 'F' gates to ry 27L via outer circular, n-s, 27L parallel. Upon turning from the ramp to the outer taxiway I realized that we would be #1 for takeoff upon reaching the end of the runway. Prior to calling for the taxi checklist, I called for the delayed engine start procedure. As the engine started to spool up, I turned the aircraft onto the n-s taxiway to transition to the 27L parallel. I was distraction by monitoring the starting engine and failed to turn onto the 27L parallel taxiway, instead, I taxied the remaining short length of the n-s onto the active 27L runway. I quickly realized that my 'taxiway' was way too wide and advanced the power to quickly clear at the nearby high speed exit. I apologized to the tower (they had noticed the error as I was about to clear the runway) and taxied to the end of the parallel taxiway and was cleared for takeoff. I would consider myself to be highly experienced with operations at ord. I would list the causative factors as follows: distrs with a delayed engine start procedure during a critical phase of taxi. Total absence of other ground traffic along my route to the runway. This is most unusual for ord and 'follow the leader' is a lot easier than having to pay close attention to the taxiway markings. Relatively poor taxiway markings at ord. This applies to the paint on the concrete and to the tiny billboards that mark the txwys. It is hard to fault the ord ground and tower controllers as they are the best in the world. The time that it took for me to go the short distance to make the runway incursion was so slight that I surely caught them off guard. I was the only airliner moving in that area and I can't see how they could anticipate an error like that. To prevent a recurrence of this error I will plan to hold these distracting procedures until I am set on a final path to the runway where a diversion from the important business at hand will not put the aircraft in jeopardy. This will leave my other crew members available to assist with situational awareness. Supplemental information from acn 164500. We must have been somewhat distraction with the delayed engine start procedure and perhaps the fact that the company had declared bankruptcy that morning.

Title: ACR LGT RWY INCURSION DURING TAXI FOR TKOF.

Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI FROM 'F' GATES TO RY 27L VIA OUTER CIRCULAR, N-S, 27L PARALLEL. UPON TURNING FROM THE RAMP TO THE OUTER TXWY I REALIZED THAT WE WOULD BE #1 FOR TKOF UPON REACHING THE END OF THE RWY. PRIOR TO CALLING FOR THE TAXI CHKLIST, I CALLED FOR THE DELAYED ENG START PROC. AS THE ENG STARTED TO SPOOL UP, I TURNED THE ACFT ONTO THE N-S TXWY TO TRANSITION TO THE 27L PARALLEL. I WAS DISTR BY MONITORING THE STARTING ENG AND FAILED TO TURN ONTO THE 27L PARALLEL TXWY, INSTEAD, I TAXIED THE REMAINING SHORT LENGTH OF THE N-S ONTO THE ACTIVE 27L RWY. I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT MY 'TXWY' WAS WAY TOO WIDE AND ADVANCED THE PWR TO QUICKLY CLR AT THE NEARBY HIGH SPD EXIT. I APOLOGIZED TO THE TWR (THEY HAD NOTICED THE ERROR AS I WAS ABOUT TO CLR THE RWY) AND TAXIED TO THE END OF THE PARALLEL TXWY AND WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE HIGHLY EXPERIENCED WITH OPS AT ORD. I WOULD LIST THE CAUSATIVE FACTORS AS FOLLOWS: DISTRS WITH A DELAYED ENG START PROC DURING A CRITICAL PHASE OF TAXI. TOTAL ABSENCE OF OTHER GND TFC ALONG MY RTE TO THE RWY. THIS IS MOST UNUSUAL FOR ORD AND 'FOLLOW THE LEADER' IS A LOT EASIER THAN HAVING TO PAY CLOSE ATTN TO THE TXWY MARKINGS. RELATIVELY POOR TXWY MARKINGS AT ORD. THIS APPLIES TO THE PAINT ON THE CONCRETE AND TO THE TINY BILLBOARDS THAT MARK THE TXWYS. IT IS HARD TO FAULT THE ORD GND AND TWR CTLRS AS THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD. THE TIME THAT IT TOOK FOR ME TO GO THE SHORT DISTANCE TO MAKE THE RWY INCURSION WAS SO SLIGHT THAT I SURELY CAUGHT THEM OFF GUARD. I WAS THE ONLY AIRLINER MOVING IN THAT AREA AND I CAN'T SEE HOW THEY COULD ANTICIPATE AN ERROR LIKE THAT. TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE OF THIS ERROR I WILL PLAN TO HOLD THESE DISTRACTING PROCS UNTIL I AM SET ON A FINAL PATH TO THE RWY WHERE A DIVERSION FROM THE IMPORTANT BUSINESS AT HAND WILL NOT PUT THE ACFT IN JEOPARDY. THIS WILL LEAVE MY OTHER CREW MEMBERS AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 164500. WE MUST HAVE BEEN SOMEWHAT DISTR WITH THE DELAYED ENG START PROC AND PERHAPS THE FACT THAT THE COMPANY HAD DECLARED BANKRUPTCY THAT MORNING.
