Narrative:

After boarding and departing the gate on time; we taxied to the runway and never received our final weights. When we queried operations and dispatch; we were told to return to the gate because 'hazmat was improperly loaded'. Once back at the gate; we were told that baggage needed to be loaded around the cargo in question. When this was completed; we asked why we had not received a dangerous goods notification. The supervisor could not provide us an answer; so in the interest of not delaying further; we decided to have the cargo in question removed and depart without it.
