Narrative:
I was hand-flying the aircraft up to FL230. I thought we were cleared up to our cruise flight level of FL330, but actually were told to expect FL330. Shortly upon our checking in with the center frequency, I climbed up to 23300' when the altitude alert sounded, at which time I returned to FL230. The lack of crew coordination on my part with my first officer would have avoided this deviation. If I would have questioned the clearance with him, I would have understood the altitude restriction.
