Narrative:

Flying J209 over rdu, I missed the turn to tyi and flew outbnd on J207 for 15-20 mi before realizing my mistake and turning back. The first officer and I were trying to raise center on the radio and we both got involved in this job which I should have left for him. This resulted in me being distracted form navigation, which is what I should have been doing. Once we raised center they cleared us to tyi and there did not appear to be any conflict, but it could have been serious. We don't know how we lost communication with center. We must have flown out of our sector's range and either we were not switched over or we missed the call. I need to let the first officer do his job and not get so involved in his job that I stop doing mine.
