Narrative:

While descending into clt on the chsly 3 RNAV arrival we asked for 10 degrees right for tcu near whize. Approved by ATC and direct caatt when able. We both monitored clearing the weather then confirmed direct caatt; I then saw we have to penetrate a tcu hiding behind the first one; which distracted me from verifying that managed descent was reestablished on the FMA. While I picked up the PA and told the flight attendant's to take their seats immediately. In a split second I heard the autopilot disengage and felt a hard pull up by the first officer; saw 8700 feet on the altimeter; TCAS - 'traffic; traffic'; ATC - aircraft X maintain 9000 feet; traffic 2 o'clock climbing to 8000 feet. We did not receive an RA and did not see the traffic. When we turned off the RNAV arrival for weather deviation we should have verified new altitude with ATC instead of continuing to 6000 feet. I was concerned about an important safety issue for our flight attendant's but unfortunately it was at a critical monitoring time (25 seconds) when I should have verified we were reestablished on the automated managed descent. I need to be more alert not to be distracted from monitoring duties while being turned onto an arrival. Also when turned off an opd arrival we need to confirm our next altitude with ATC!!

Title: A320 Captain reported overshooting assigned altitude on descent into CLT during a weather deviation.

Narrative: While descending into CLT on the CHSLY 3 RNAV arrival we asked for 10 degrees right for TCU near WHIZE.
