Narrative:

I made several calls to 122.8 at cbg, no answer. I could see something big was going on but no aerial activity. I called downwind, base, and final, on short final, I saw air show type planes on the taxiway then saw a small yellow 'X' between the end of the runway 16 and '16' numbers. Executed a go around; flew length of the runway. I called on radio that 'X' was very small and someone should be talking. Someone came on the radio and said they'd been notamed closed for 4 hours and the blue angels were due in any second and I should get out of the area. I said I was leaving as fast as possible and flew north at 2000'. I never saw another aircraft in the area. Never thought there would be a big air show at such a small remote airport on a wed, although the thought did occur to me that if there was an air show, that this would be the time of day that it would be going on. I thought maybe it was a fly-in of some sort, but should have guessed that it was an air show from the number of people there. I did not check NOTAMS and normally don't for trips to uncontrolled airports. This is the first time in 20 yrs of flying I've come upon this situation. I've come across the occasional closed runway but don't land on the ones with X's. Their 'X' was not very big and did not appear to comply with aim recommended size. It was my error to assume no need to check ahead on NOTAMS. I was making a large round robin with several stops. The WX was gorgeous with no reason to call FSS for WX. Only corrective action to recommend is check NOTAMS for each stop and if you see a crowd, expect an air show. I could not find any FARS or aim information relative to airport closings, only on closed runways. I did not land on the one and only runway that was closed, so the only possible violation might be 'careless and reckless operation' for not checking the NOTAMS and entering an area posted as a hazard. I am certainly glad the blue angels were not zooming about at the time, but then again, if they had been, I would have seen them. I found out at the airport that I diverted to that the airport office at cambridge is locked up during the show to keep the public out of the restrooms, that is probably why no one would answer my calls to unicom.

Title: SMA PLT INADVERTENTLY PENETRATES AIRSPACE DESIGNATED FOR AIRSHOW.

Narrative: I MADE SEVERAL CALLS TO 122.8 AT CBG, NO ANSWER. I COULD SEE SOMETHING BIG WAS GOING ON BUT NO AERIAL ACTIVITY. I CALLED DOWNWIND, BASE, AND FINAL, ON SHORT FINAL, I SAW AIR SHOW TYPE PLANES ON THE TXWY THEN SAW A SMALL YELLOW 'X' BTWN THE END OF THE RWY 16 AND '16' NUMBERS. EXECUTED A GO AROUND; FLEW LENGTH OF THE RWY. I CALLED ON RADIO THAT 'X' WAS VERY SMALL AND SOMEONE SHOULD BE TALKING. SOMEONE CAME ON THE RADIO AND SAID THEY'D BEEN NOTAMED CLOSED FOR 4 HRS AND THE BLUE ANGELS WERE DUE IN ANY SECOND AND I SHOULD GET OUT OF THE AREA. I SAID I WAS LEAVING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND FLEW N AT 2000'. I NEVER SAW ANOTHER ACFT IN THE AREA. NEVER THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE A BIG AIR SHOW AT SUCH A SMALL REMOTE ARPT ON A WED, ALTHOUGH THE THOUGHT DID OCCUR TO ME THAT IF THERE WAS AN AIR SHOW, THAT THIS WOULD BE THE TIME OF DAY THAT IT WOULD BE GOING ON. I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS A FLY-IN OF SOME SORT, BUT SHOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT IT WAS AN AIR SHOW FROM THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THERE. I DID NOT CHK NOTAMS AND NORMALLY DON'T FOR TRIPS TO UNCTLED ARPTS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN 20 YRS OF FLYING I'VE COME UPON THIS SITUATION. I'VE COME ACROSS THE OCCASIONAL CLOSED RWY BUT DON'T LAND ON THE ONES WITH X'S. THEIR 'X' WAS NOT VERY BIG AND DID NOT APPEAR TO COMPLY WITH AIM RECOMMENDED SIZE. IT WAS MY ERROR TO ASSUME NO NEED TO CHK AHEAD ON NOTAMS. I WAS MAKING A LARGE ROUND ROBIN WITH SEVERAL STOPS. THE WX WAS GORGEOUS WITH NO REASON TO CALL FSS FOR WX. ONLY CORRECTIVE ACTION TO RECOMMEND IS CHK NOTAMS FOR EACH STOP AND IF YOU SEE A CROWD, EXPECT AN AIR SHOW. I COULD NOT FIND ANY FARS OR AIM INFO RELATIVE TO ARPT CLOSINGS, ONLY ON CLOSED RWYS. I DID NOT LAND ON THE ONE AND ONLY RWY THAT WAS CLOSED, SO THE ONLY POSSIBLE VIOLATION MIGHT BE 'CARELESS AND RECKLESS OPERATION' FOR NOT CHKING THE NOTAMS AND ENTERING AN AREA POSTED AS A HAZARD. I AM CERTAINLY GLAD THE BLUE ANGELS WERE NOT ZOOMING ABOUT AT THE TIME, BUT THEN AGAIN, IF THEY HAD BEEN, I WOULD HAVE SEEN THEM. I FOUND OUT AT THE ARPT THAT I DIVERTED TO THAT THE ARPT OFFICE AT CAMBRIDGE IS LOCKED UP DURING THE SHOW TO KEEP THE PUBLIC OUT OF THE RESTROOMS, THAT IS PROBABLY WHY NO ONE WOULD ANSWER MY CALLS TO UNICOM.
