Narrative:

On VOR approach to runway 16 at pvd, can descend to 1170' inside 5 mi, can descend to MDA inside 3.7 mi. At 4 mi, we had inadvertently already descended to 800' prompting controller to state 'low altitude warning adjust altitude immediately.' we realized and corrected our mistake and continued to landing. I would like to thank the controller for his help, and I'm glad to know the warning system is in place; I'll make every effort not to call it into use again.
