Narrative:

Flight crew expected and briefed for ILS runway 8L approach. Approach controller vectored us to runway 9L. We did not realize runway 9L was intended approach and intercepted runway 8L localizer (vector was 180 degree across runway 8L to runway 9L). Approach controller apparently realized our error and vectored us back to 120 degree for runway 9L. Approach was accomplished west/O further incident. This occurred after all night flight lax to atl with crew fatigue. Arrival from northwest normally approachs to northern runway (8L/26R). Fatigue and anticipation contributed to missed (incorrectly received) approach clearance.
