Narrative:

Flying alone, I had left lake-in-the-hills airport (il) returning to schaumburg airport (il), flying VFR. I used a compass heading of 140 degrees to intercept ord VOR (113.9 MHZ) radial 90 degrees. This was to put me over schaumburg airport, but the point of intercept put me east of schaumburg airport. I erroneously assumed that I was west of schaumburg airport and headed east on the VOR radial until the ord ILS OM indicator light and audible warning activated approximately 5 mi from ord. Realizing my location, I made a 90 degree right turn, going south for a few mins to clear the ILS approach, and then another 90 degrees right heading west to exit the ord TCA. On my way out I passed a twin engine commercial aircraft heading east. We were separated by approximately 300' horizontal and 150' vertical. My altitude at the time was 1700' MSL. I cleared the ord TCA with no further incident. My time within the ord TCA was estimated at 6 mins, altitude 1700-1800' MSL. No radio contact with ord control tower was made. A phone report was made upon landing at schaumburg airport.
