Narrative:

We were cleared to 16000', all altitude calls were normal and professionally done. Nevertheless I did not level at 16000' and stopped the climb at 16600' after my first officer called my attention to the altitude. I returned to 16000' and am very sure no conflict occurred, at least no comments were made by center. Mitigating circumstances? Perhaps. After our first leg of the day (sea-mem) we had 1+50 ground time in mem prior to proceeding to dtw. After setting up the cockpit and completing checklists for our leg to dtw I learned of a confrontation my first officer had with a pilot in mem opns. (My first officer was hired by company early in '89 and was not connected with or has any ties to the old xyz airline or ZZZ pilot group). An ex xyz first officer confronted my first officer and asked when he was hired and what he was flying. My first officer told him. The response, 'it's suckers like you that should be back on the panel'. My first officer had the wisdom to turn and leave, while very agitated. I was so distressed by this cretins conduct I could not get it out of my mind. As I went through 16000' in my climb that was all I had on my mind. Is this my professional conduct or an excuse? Hell no. First altitude bust in 18000 hours and I accept full responsibility. I have learned from this and I offer it in hope that others may. I only hope my first officer's attitude will not be too greatly influenced by this fools unconscionable conduct. Yes I am also an ex xyz airline-XXX airline-ZZZ pilot.
