Narrative:
During arrival vectoring to ILS [we] had a trailing edge (te) flap dissagree EICAS message after selecting flaps 5 from flaps 1. Flaps had functioned normally after selecting the 1 position and did not move after selecting flaps 5. After EICAS message [we] informed [ATC] of situation and asked for a holding pattern on final to work the problem. Was advised we would get vectors. Conditions were day VMC with some scattered ground fog. I asked PF to assume radio as well as flying duties while international relief officer and I continued into QRH. QRH procedure led [us] to determine we would be able to land flaps 20; vref 20 using the alternate flap system. Using the non-normal landing configuration data; we agreed that a safe landing could be continued. We informed [ATC] when we were ready to return for the approach. I then sent an ACARS message to dispatch advising them of the situation and that we would be landing shortly. I then spoke with flight attendant and advised him of the situation stating we would be landing in about 10 minutes; and preparing for an evacuation would not be necessary. Approach and landing were accomplished without incident.side note: we followed up on the status of the aircraft and found that after cycling the flaps several times and performing some other tests; the fault did not recur.
