Narrative:

Approaching crg VOR en route to kewr and climbing trough 36500 ft on the way to 39000 the autopilot disconnected and the captain side screens and top screen went dark. We immediately realized that the aircraft had lost the left generator. At this point the captain transferred the aircraft controls and radios to me to run the QRH. While he was running the checklist we noticed a strong electrical odor that prompted us to head back to [the departure airport]. We accomplished the remaining of not normal and normal check-lists and proceeded to land uneventfully.
