Narrative:
After takeoff; I raised the landing gear handle and the left main landing gear failed to retract; followed by a 'gear disagree' message. The first officer continued to fly while I notified ATC and the relief pilot retrieved the checklist. The relief pilot and I accomplished the gear disagree checklist. We held and contacted dispatch and [maintenance]. After reviewing our situation; we all agreed that our flight could not continue to [our international destination]. I [advised ATC]; proceeded to obtain vectors over the ocean and dumped fuel. After dumping was complete; we continued to fly around and burn fuel to get below max landing weight. Once below our max landing weight; we headed back toward [departure airport]. Even though our landing gear indicated down and locked I called for emergency vehicles standing by as a precaution. An uneventful landing followed.
