Narrative:
I am a newly rated instrument pilot and have been flying 'local' IFR flts for training and experience. I had a clearance to salem airport and had requested the localizer back course approach. Seattle center had cleared me for the approach via the newberg transition. While I was still well north of the localizer, I mistakenly looked at the wrong CDI (it was not even tuned to the localizer), interpreted it that I had already flown through the localizer, and so I immediately turned to the local heading (actually turned 20 degree past so as to get 'reestablished') and started a descent. After about 30 seconds and at 4500 MSL (my assigned altitude had been 5000, but the newberg transition was 3000), I realized what I had done, just as center said 'say heading'! I told them I had turned too soon, they said ok, I'll have to vector you to the localizer course. Since I was off the newberg transition, I climbed back up to 5000. After this, the approach was normal.

Narrative: I AM A NEWLY RATED INSTRUMENT PLT AND HAVE BEEN FLYING 'LOCAL' IFR FLTS FOR TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. I HAD A CLRNC TO SALEM ARPT AND HAD REQUESTED THE LOC BC APCH. SEATTLE CENTER HAD CLRED ME FOR THE APCH VIA THE NEWBERG TRANSITION. WHILE I WAS STILL WELL N OF THE LOC, I MISTAKENLY LOOKED AT THE WRONG CDI (IT WAS NOT EVEN TUNED TO THE LOC), INTERPRETED IT THAT I HAD ALREADY FLOWN THROUGH THE LOC, AND SO I IMMEDIATELY TURNED TO THE LOCAL HDG (ACTUALLY TURNED 20 DEG PAST SO AS TO GET 'REESTABLISHED') AND STARTED A DSCNT. AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND AT 4500 MSL (MY ASSIGNED ALT HAD BEEN 5000, BUT THE NEWBERG TRANSITION WAS 3000), I REALIZED WHAT I HAD DONE, JUST AS CENTER SAID 'SAY HDG'! I TOLD THEM I HAD TURNED TOO SOON, THEY SAID OK, I'LL HAVE TO VECTOR YOU TO THE LOC COURSE. SINCE I WAS OFF THE NEWBERG TRANSITION, I CLIMBED BACK UP TO 5000. AFTER THIS, THE APCH WAS NORMAL.
