Narrative:

I was signed on as a controller on west arrival at ord approach control. There was a deviation signed on also who I was monitoring. Air carrier X checked on the frequency 40 mi southeast of ord and was issued a 290 degree heading for runway 27L. I got busy explaining a traffic situation on the downwind 10 mi east of the airport and did not notice air carrier X approaching air carrier Y on the runway 23L final. The trnee issued corrective action to air carrier X after sep had been lost. Air carrier Y reported air carrier X in sight before sep was lost, but the other controller did not tell him to maintain visibility sep.
