Narrative:

During cruise; FL310 oceanic route; got a master warning; level 3 'air manf 2 fail'. Air synoptic page displayed red line from #2 engine. Followed QRH procedures. Brought #2 throttle to idle; synoptic red line turned amber along with a pack 2 off message. Selected confirm engine out on FMS and selected mct. Discussed problem on sat phone with dispatch and maintenance. All agreed on course of action. We declared emergency/mayday on cpdlc and on HF and received clearance to turn around and descend to FL280. Made radio call on 121.5 and 1XX.xx stating our actions. We noticed that our emergency clearance received on cpdlc came after cpdlc logged onto ZZZZ fir; 200nm prior to the switch over point. Cpdlc would not relog onto ZZZZ1 fir. Therefore we also declared the emergency/mayday with ZZZZ1 fir on HF. ZZZZ1 fir informed us on HF that ZZZZ airport would open if we would prefer; so we opted to land at ZZZZ airport.
