Narrative:

Prior to departure from san jose int'l airport, received clearance to fly wbound, following highway 101. After departure, got switched over to bay approach with flight following along route. Approximately 10-15 mi southwest of sfo, controller asked if aircraft was equipped with mode C. I replied that it was not, but that it did have an authorization from bay TRACON to fly without mode C until oct/xx/89. He replied that he did not think that would authorize flight through a TCA. I replied that I was not sure, but I would be happy to read it to him. He said that was not necessary. Flight proceeded with no further communication regarding mode C.
