Narrative:

Departed rdu for gso. Initially assigned and leveled at 5000'. After a few mins at 5000' we were cleared to what later recalled to be 11000' (at least that is the altitude I set in the altitude alerter and we leveled at 11000'). A couple mins later the controller asked our altitude and I told him 11000'. We were told to immediately descend to 10000', which we did. The controller asked why we had been at 11000'. I replied that we had been assigned 11000' and that was what I had read back. After termination of the flight I was asked to call rdu approach which I did and was informed they had pulled the tapes and that we had been assigned and read back 10000'.
