Narrative:

Dedication ceremony and air show at M9. I received 2 preflight briefings from jackson, ms. FSS that morning, prior to departing M9. During the briefings, I was told that M09 would not be closed during the show hours. The only NOTAM available advised of high speed, low level activity within 5 NM of M9, suggesting avoidance (not requiring it) of the area during the period XX00-XX15 zulu. I was also told that an army guard unit would be providing advisories on frequency 126.2. The flight to M9 was uneventful, but when I called yazoo city advisory 10 mi southeast, expecting a unicom type reply, I was answered by yazoo tower and given specific pattern entry instructions, followed by a landing clearance at the appropriate time. I decided to leave before the end of the air show. I called the tower between performances and received approval to back-taxi on runway 35 for a northerly departure (wind estimated from north at 8 KTS). About halfway down the runway the tower called me and said they could not approve my departure until after the show was over, and instructed me to exit the runway at the next intersection. I complied. Shortly after, a rep from jackson, ms, FSDO approached me and asked what I was doing on the runway. I replied that I was given taxi authority/authorized by the tower. He told me there was no tower, but advisory only, and that the airport was closed until the end of the show. I informed him that the 'advisory' had been calling itself 'tower,' and issuing landing/takeoff clrncs all day. I also advised him that when I checked the NOTAMS during preflight briefings, there was not mention of the airport being closed. Although no incident occurred, I still think this confusion worth reporting. As an 11 yr veteran air traffic controller, I am particularly sensitive to far violations.

Narrative: DEDICATION CEREMONY AND AIR SHOW AT M9. I RECEIVED 2 PREFLT BRIEFINGS FROM JACKSON, MS. FSS THAT MORNING, PRIOR TO DEPARTING M9. DURING THE BRIEFINGS, I WAS TOLD THAT M09 WOULD NOT BE CLOSED DURING THE SHOW HRS. THE ONLY NOTAM AVAILABLE ADVISED OF HIGH SPD, LOW LEVEL ACTIVITY WITHIN 5 NM OF M9, SUGGESTING AVOIDANCE (NOT REQUIRING IT) OF THE AREA DURING THE PERIOD XX00-XX15 ZULU. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT AN ARMY GUARD UNIT WOULD BE PROVIDING ADVISORIES ON FREQ 126.2. THE FLT TO M9 WAS UNEVENTFUL, BUT WHEN I CALLED YAZOO CITY ADVISORY 10 MI SE, EXPECTING A UNICOM TYPE REPLY, I WAS ANSWERED BY YAZOO TWR AND GIVEN SPECIFIC PATTERN ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS, FOLLOWED BY A LNDG CLRNC AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME. I DECIDED TO LEAVE BEFORE THE END OF THE AIR SHOW. I CALLED THE TWR BTWN PERFORMANCES AND RECEIVED APPROVAL TO BACK-TAXI ON RWY 35 FOR A NORTHERLY DEP (WIND ESTIMATED FROM N AT 8 KTS). ABOUT HALFWAY DOWN THE RWY THE TWR CALLED ME AND SAID THEY COULD NOT APPROVE MY DEP UNTIL AFTER THE SHOW WAS OVER, AND INSTRUCTED ME TO EXIT THE RWY AT THE NEXT INTXN. I COMPLIED. SHORTLY AFTER, A REP FROM JACKSON, MS, FSDO APPROACHED ME AND ASKED WHAT I WAS DOING ON THE RWY. I REPLIED THAT I WAS GIVEN TAXI AUTH BY THE TWR. HE TOLD ME THERE WAS NO TWR, BUT ADVISORY ONLY, AND THAT THE ARPT WAS CLOSED UNTIL THE END OF THE SHOW. I INFORMED HIM THAT THE 'ADVISORY' HAD BEEN CALLING ITSELF 'TWR,' AND ISSUING LNDG/TKOF CLRNCS ALL DAY. I ALSO ADVISED HIM THAT WHEN I CHKED THE NOTAMS DURING PREFLT BRIEFINGS, THERE WAS NOT MENTION OF THE ARPT BEING CLOSED. ALTHOUGH NO INCIDENT OCCURRED, I STILL THINK THIS CONFUSION WORTH RPTING. AS AN 11 YR VETERAN AIR TFC CTLR, I AM PARTICULARLY SENSITIVE TO FAR VIOLATIONS.
