Narrative:

Started APU 2000' MSL, 5 miles from runway. Egt and RPM began to rise. During taxi-in noticed the APU power available light was not on. Saw the APU egt at 800 degree and RPM at 20%. Shut the APU off and moved the fire control southwest to 'off and agent arm.' the fire detection 'B' loop then illuminated and we elected to discharge the #1 fire bottle. Egt began to decrease in 5-10 seconds. During exterior inspection found a plastic bag in the APU ram door. Noticed mild smoke in rear stairs area. Probably should have followed the entire start sequence through more closely but we were concentrating on landing at the time.
