Narrative:

After departure received rv to join 009 degree right of aml and subsequently cleared to FL210. Same crew had earlier landed west/O clearance, however aggressive conversation continued in cockpit and concentration on flying skills was minimal. Captain was flying, first officer communicating with ATC. Just prior to passing FL200 ZDC 134.15 advised our flight to contact ZDC on 132.2. I changed frequency, waited for a break, then advised ZDC large transport, 'is with you passing 21.3 for fl...,' and I cut myself off realizing we had just busted altitude. Our rate of climb was 2000+'. I immediately told captain only cleared to FL210! He chopped throttles, lowered nose smoothly and recovered around FL216. Recontacted ZDC and was given clearance to FL270 with no reproach. Again lack of attention and complacency led to a possible tragedy in a most congested time and airspace. Maybe when you fly a long time and make lots of money and piloting an aircraft is just a job the dull rush of 300 KTS and forward blue haze can lull one into accepting the sleepy drug boredom, its effects insidiously unnoticed until, like awakening from a nightmare, you realize what's about to happen to you is no dream. It's too late and...

Title: ACR LGT OVERSHOT ALT ON CLIMB. FLT CREW BEHAVIOR.

Narrative: AFTER DEP RECEIVED RV TO JOIN 009 DEG R OF AML AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED TO FL210. SAME CREW HAD EARLIER LANDED W/O CLRNC, HOWEVER AGGRESSIVE CONVERSATION CONTINUED IN COCKPIT AND CONCENTRATION ON FLYING SKILLS WAS MINIMAL. CAPT WAS FLYING, F/O COMMUNICATING WITH ATC. JUST PRIOR TO PASSING FL200 ZDC 134.15 ADVISED OUR FLT TO CONTACT ZDC ON 132.2. I CHANGED FREQ, WAITED FOR A BREAK, THEN ADVISED ZDC LGT, 'IS WITH YOU PASSING 21.3 FOR FL...,' AND I CUT MYSELF OFF REALIZING WE HAD JUST BUSTED ALT. OUR RATE OF CLB WAS 2000+'. I IMMEDIATELY TOLD CAPT ONLY CLRED TO FL210! HE CHOPPED THROTTLES, LOWERED NOSE SMOOTHLY AND RECOVERED AROUND FL216. RECONTACTED ZDC AND WAS GIVEN CLRNC TO FL270 WITH NO REPROACH. AGAIN LACK OF ATTN AND COMPLACENCY LED TO A POSSIBLE TRAGEDY IN A MOST CONGESTED TIME AND AIRSPACE. MAYBE WHEN YOU FLY A LONG TIME AND MAKE LOTS OF MONEY AND PILOTING AN ACFT IS JUST A JOB THE DULL RUSH OF 300 KTS AND FORWARD BLUE HAZE CAN LULL ONE INTO ACCEPTING THE SLEEPY DRUG BOREDOM, ITS EFFECTS INSIDIOUSLY UNNOTICED UNTIL, LIKE AWAKENING FROM A NIGHTMARE, YOU REALIZE WHAT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN TO YOU IS NO DREAM.
