Narrative:

Our inbound aircraft was late arriving and upon receipt of our ATC clearance for the outbnd leg, we were informed that we had an XA44 wheels up time. Needless to say, we were rushed and our speed was predicated on making this time. Pushback and start were uneventful and we were cleared to taxi to 12R via taxiway delta at approximately XA42 local time. About 100 yds before reaching the end of the runway we were cleared for takeoff on runway 12R. Runways 12R and 17 intersect near their approach ends and still being intent upon making my XA44 wheels up time, I taxied onto what I thought was 12R, but what was actually runway 17. At the time I was completing the pre-takeoff checklist with my first officer. I rolled about 500' down the runway before my error was noted by my first officer and the tower operator. I exited the runway at the first taxiway, returned to the end of 12R and made a normal takeoff after being reclred by the tower. Several factors contributed to this error. First, my relative unfamiliarity with hobby airport, this being my second trip into the field, secondly, rushing to make the wheels up time was a mistake on my part and led to missing cues which I should have picked up on. Thirdly, I normally set the heading bug on the HSI when the takeoff runway is given. In my haste, I didn't--another deviation from my personal SOP.

Title: CLEARED FOR TKOF RWY 12R AT HOU. IN ERROR, STARTED TKOF ON 17. ABORTED AND DEPARTED THE CORRECT RWY.

Narrative: OUR INBND ACFT WAS LATE ARRIVING AND UPON RECEIPT OF OUR ATC CLRNC FOR THE OUTBND LEG, WE WERE INFORMED THAT WE HAD AN XA44 WHEELS UP TIME. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE WERE RUSHED AND OUR SPD WAS PREDICATED ON MAKING THIS TIME. PUSHBACK AND START WERE UNEVENTFUL AND WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO 12R VIA TXWY DELTA AT APPROX XA42 LCL TIME. ABOUT 100 YDS BEFORE REACHING THE END OF THE RWY WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 12R. RWYS 12R AND 17 INTERSECT NEAR THEIR APCH ENDS AND STILL BEING INTENT UPON MAKING MY XA44 WHEELS UP TIME, I TAXIED ONTO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS 12R, BUT WHAT WAS ACTUALLY RWY 17. AT THE TIME I WAS COMPLETING THE PRE-TKOF CHKLIST WITH MY F/O. I ROLLED ABOUT 500' DOWN THE RWY BEFORE MY ERROR WAS NOTED BY MY F/O AND THE TWR OPERATOR. I EXITED THE RWY AT THE FIRST TXWY, RETURNED TO THE END OF 12R AND MADE A NORMAL TKOF AFTER BEING RECLRED BY THE TWR. SEVERAL FACTORS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS ERROR. FIRST, MY RELATIVE UNFAMILIARITY WITH HOBBY ARPT, THIS BEING MY SECOND TRIP INTO THE FIELD, SECONDLY, RUSHING TO MAKE THE WHEELS UP TIME WAS A MISTAKE ON MY PART AND LED TO MISSING CUES WHICH I SHOULD HAVE PICKED UP ON. THIRDLY, I NORMALLY SET THE HDG BUG ON THE HSI WHEN THE TKOF RWY IS GIVEN. IN MY HASTE, I DIDN'T--ANOTHER DEVIATION FROM MY PERSONAL SOP.
