Narrative:

While in the descent for landing a 'le assym' message appeared on the EICAS prior to flap extension. We started the QRH procedure; notified approach control of the problem and declared an emergency due to a flight control malfunction. We requested a turn off the final approach course to complete the the checklist and configure for landing. When we were configured; we intercepted the approach course and made a normal landing with 20 flaps. Due to the higher speed we rolled out to the end of the landing runway. Arff followed us to the gate where the passengers deplaned normally.
