Narrative:
Number 2 engine stall ECAM and loud bang happened at the same time. The first officer was initially flying the aircraft. I took over soon after the event. He followed the immediate action of reducing power to idle on #2 engine. EPR indication: 0. Other engine parameters normal. We elected to land at a nearby airport. We declared an emergency; and had the flight attendants prep the cabin for evacuation. We requested fire equipment to stand by. The landing was uneventful. We stopped on the runway; and had the firemen look us over. We then taxied to the gate.
