Narrative:

I was the flight instrument on a training flight in an mdt. My student is an mdt type rated pilot with 11500 hours who is in the process of upgrading to captain in our operation. While on downwind for a touch and go landing to runway 33 at saf the pilot in the left seat saw traffic out of the left window and he queried me as to what the traffic was and what its intentions were. I thought the traffic was an small aircraft which was approaching runway 2. When the small aircraft appeared on my side of the aircraft I was a red and white small aircraft about 100' below our altitude. I queried tower who now had the traffic in sight. Tower called in the blind to the traffic who was on frequency and stated he was going to VOR and then intended to land at saf. Later information that tower received was that the aircraft had departed durango, co, for santa flight engineer. The pilot stated he didn't know he was in the air traffic area as he didn't have his charts with him.
